Newcastle to prioritise keeping Alexander Isak instead of Bruno Guimaraes amid Arsenal & Man City interest

Newcastle United would rather sell Bruno Guimaraes than Alexander Isak this summer, with Arsenal interested in both and Manchester City eyeing the midfielder, sources have told 90min.

Arsenal’s priority for the summer transfer window is to bring in a new striker, but they would also like to add a central midfielder as well if it’s within their financial means. Guimaraes, along with Real Sociedad’s Martin Zubimendi, are concrete targets.

Arsenal aren’t the only club interested in Guimaraes. City have already approached the player’s camp, while PSG are also contemplating a move.

City are looking for a player to compliment Rodri and like the fact Guimaraes can play as a number six or a number eight. West Ham United’s Lucas Paqueta is still a potential target as well following a failed pursuit in August 2023.

The reigning Premier League champions still want Kevin De Bruyne to extend his contract beyond 2025 and there is optimism he will, but if the Belgian midfielder was to agree to a move to the Saudi Pro League, then a creative and versatile midfielder like Paqueta would become a priority.

However, there is nothing to indicate De Bruyne is entertaining such a move at this time despite the fact he can be classified as a top Saudi target. Unless De Bruyne signs a new deal before the season ends, it is almost certain Saudi dealmakers will make City an offer.

Pep Guardiola’s side would have significant funds to utilise if De Bruyne did give the green light to a Saudi switch, perhaps even allowing for both Guimaraes and Paqueta to both be signed. Saudi Pro League sporting director Michael Emenalo is already aware De Bruyne will cost at least £100m even with only a year left on his current deal this summer.

90min understands Newcastle need to bring in £30-50m to stay within the Premier League’s Profit & Sustainability Rules (PSR), but more funds will be necessary if they are to also strengthen their squad.

Although qualification to next season’s Champions League can’t realistically be attained, sixth-placed Newcastle are back on track for some form of European football next season. This is a welcome boost for the club’s finances, but means further squad depth is likely required. Qualifying for Europe also comes with a squad bonus, albeit one the club budgeted for in pre-season.

Newcastle are adamant Isak is not for sale, and it is unlikely the sporting director who replaces Dan Ashworth, who is expected to join Manchester United, will advise differently. 24-year-old Isak has 17 Premier League goals so far this season and is viewed as integral not just to Eddie Howe’s squad, but the club’s project as a whole. Replacing him would also prove costly, with no guarantees of filling the goals void, making a sale ill-advised.

Newcastle would naturally love to keep Guimaraes as well, but if the Brazilian’s £100m release clause is triggered, it will take the situation out of their control.

When Guimaraes signed his new five-year contract at St James’ Park, a release clause was included, which is quite rare for Newcastle. But 90min understands there is also a verbal agreement in place that Guimaraes will be allowed to talk to Champions League clubs, and that offers below his release clause will be engaged with providing they exceed £80m.

Newcastle realise it’s preferable to lose just one player, if financial needs must, rather than having to sell several names to raise the same amount, many of whom they won’t be able to readily replace.

Kieran Trippier and Miguel Almiron were subject of January approaches from Bayern Munich and Al-Shabab respectively, while clubs are aware that Callum Wilson and Jamaal Lascelles aren’t unsellable if money is required to avoid PSR breaches. But all four together would likely command a similar collective fee as Guimaraes alone.

The advantage Newcastle has is there are already plenty of options in Eddie Howe’s three-man midfield, even if not all the players fit into Guimaraes’ exact mould.

Sandro Tonali will return from his ban for betting breaches next season, Joelinton – who can also play in attack – has just signed a new four-year deal, Lewis Miley and Elliot Anderson are both highly thought of at the club, Sean Longstaff has been key all season and Joe Willock is another option as well.

Any significant fee procured for Guimaraes would also allow Newcastle to buy a replacement. Kalvin Phillips and Conor Gallagher have been looked at by the club in the past, and both could be on the move this summer.

Of course, in an ideal world, Newcastle would simply keep Guimaraes, who has forged a strong connection with the fanbase and frequently made it clear how happy he is on Tyneside.

Although the Magpies are not ‘offering’ him up just yet, there is no doubt they are braced for offers and succession planning to replace him. This is normal because of Guimaraes’ release clause, which makes a summer transfer possible even if the club do find other ways to raise capital.

Cole Palmer and the sliding-doors moments that led to his Chelsea stardom

In mid-August 2023, Chelsea wanted to grant new head coach Mauricio Pochettino’s wish of signing a versatile attacker capable of playing across the frontline. In an ideal world, that player would be left-footed and strong at coming inside off the right wing.

This pursuit to acquire such a profile saw them target Michael Olise, who they believed was available for £35m owing to a release clause in his contract. Much of the media storm around the prospective deal made it seem like a transfer was a mere formality. However, Crystal Palace disputed the manner in which Olise’s clause was triggered, effectively accusing Chelsea of tapping up the player. Chelsea backed off and the young Frenchman went on to sign a new deal in the following days, reaffirming his commitment to the Eagles.

Chelsea, running out of time to secure another signing and now the subject of public scrutiny for failing to get Olise over the line, turned their attention to Manchester City’s Cole Palmer, who they had been tracking for a few months to that point.

Palmer was used sparingly throughout the 2022/23 season but saw more regular game time towards the end of the campaign as Pep Guardiola rotated his squad to cope with the physical demands of trying to win the treble. In those appearances, he showed signs of promise, though few could have honestly predicted the 2023/24 he was about to have.

Over the summer, Palmer was one of the standout stars as England won the Under-21 European Championships. Upon his return for pre-season, he had a very frank and honest discussion with Pep Guardiola. In confidentiality, he asked for a guarantee of minutes or made it clear he had other options, and backed himself to move and succeed.

Palmer has publicly admitted he did not intend to leave City, where he had come through the academy and spent 13 years from youth teams to the senior squad. But Guardiola was unable to give him assurances of minutes and the club were thus willing to negotiate a transfer at Palmer’s request, even after he scored an outrageous goal in their Community Shield defeat to Arsenal.

“He was asking for two seasons to leave and I said stay,” Guardiola said on Friday. “He said he wanted to leave. What could we do? I said stay because Riyad [Mahrez] is gone, but for two seasons he wanted to leave.

“I said many times, I didn’t give the minutes that maybe he deserved and now he has at Chelsea. I understand completely.”

For his part, Guardiola has always been respectful to players who wish to leave his teams. He has not stood in the way of some of City’s core cohort of recent years departing as long as the club received a fair fee.

And for once, Chelsea benefited from this sort of scenario. When Kevin De Bruyne left Stamford Bridge in 2015, it was because he was at odds with Jose Mourinho’s idea of slowly introducing him into the first XI. On this occasion, the Blues were able to act swiftly and take one of City’s talents. Palmer wasn’t so much unhappy as he backed his own ability and felt he would thrive at Chelsea.

Chelsea’s interest in Palmer stemmed from Joe Shields, the club’s co-director of recruitment and talent who formerly worked for City as a youth scout. Shields boasted a great relationship with Palmer and his family, closely monitoring his project through City’s academy.

Following the fallout from the Olise saga, Chelsea sought to keep talks for Palmer on the down low. Reports of an agreement with City only came to light less than 48 hours before he officially signed, but Shields always knew Palmer was there for the taking, even before Olise fell through.

It’s a move that has benefitted all parties. Chelsea brought in exactly the sort of player they and Pochettino craved, Palmer has announced himself as one of the world’s best talents, and City were able to make a sizeable pure profit on an academy product who played less than 1,000 minutes last season.

Palmer has been the hero of Chelsea’s difficult season and he’s a frontrunner for the PFA Young Player of the Year award. Heading into Saturday’s FA Cup semi-final against his former club, Palmer has joined Erling Haaland at the top of the Premier League’s scoring charts with 20 goals. He’s also surely a shoo-in to make England’s Euro 2024 squad, and on this form, you wouldn’t put it past him coming up with a moment of magic at the finals in Germany.

And yet this all came close to never happening given it’s unlikely Chelsea would have proceeded had they got Olise over the line. Everything has fallen so perfectly into place to allow this story to unfold. The next chapter they write together could be the elimination of his former side in the FA Cup semi-finals.

Premier League Gameweek 34 & FA Cup semi-final predictions

It’s FA Cup semi-final weekend, folks, so there’s a reduction in the amount of Premier League content we’ll get to consume.

Manchester United, Chelsea, and Manchester City are all in action at Wembley, meaning there are seven league fixtures scheduled for the weekend.

Gameweek 34 is also a rare instance of Sunday dominating the fixture scheduling as a result of the midweek European action. Aston Villa, West Ham and Liverpool all head into the weekend off the back of their Thursday night travails.

Crunch time has well and truly been reached in the 2023/24 campaign, with every fixture significant at both ends of the table. Here’s how 90min sees Gameweek 34 and those FA Cup semi-finals panning out.

Saturday 20 April – Premier League

There are just a pair of three o’clockers this weekend, with both games having significant implications in the relegation dogfight.

Sheffield United and Burnley are bringing up the rear before they meet at Bramall Lane on Saturday. The Blades are as good as down, but they have certainly been competitive since Chris Wilder returned. Safety also appears unlikely for Burnley after a woeful goalkeeping error saw them drop two points at home to Brighton last weekend.

Brentford eased their relegation fears with a victory over Sheffield United last time out, but they could get dragged back into the fight should they lose at Luton. The Hatters are scrapping and clawing, picking up points where they can. Rob Edwards would’ve pinpointed this fixture as one they could win during the run-in. Luton are just a point adrift of safety.

There’s an FA Cup semi-final to enjoy before Wolves kick-off against title hopefuls Arsenal at Molineux in the late kick-off.

The Gunners endured a wretched eight days ahead of Saturday’s game, exiting Europe in midweek after they were beaten by Villa last Sunday. They can return to the summit with a win this weekend. Only a victory will suffice for Mikel Arteta’s men in the title race.

Saturday 20 April – FA Cup

The first of this weekend’s two FA Cup semi-finals pits Manchester City against Chelsea. Pep Guardiola’s dreams of leading his side to successive trebles were killed on Wednesday when they were eliminated from the Champions League, and they head to Wembley off the back of a gruelling 120-minute match with Real Madrid.

Mauricio Pochettino’s Blues will be much fresher and they could lean on such a physical advantage, while they have earned credible draws in their two Premier League meetings with City already this season.

The biggest fixture of the weekend arguably arrives at Goodison Park where Everton take on Nottingham Forest in a relegation six-pointer. The docked points derby (patent pending) will decide who ends the weekend in the bottom three should Luton beat Brentford on Saturday.

Everton have played a game fewer than Forest, with their advantage over Nuno Espirito Santo’s side being a mere point. Toffees supporters will be pleading for another ugly win as they secured against Burnley two weeks ago.

West Ham exited the Europa League on Thursday despite a spirited home effort against the imperious Bayer Leverkusen. They travel to Crystal Palace on Sunday with the Eagles in high spirits following their victory at Anfield last weekend.

Emboldened by their win over Arsenal, Conference League semi-finalists Aston Villa host Bournemouth. With Tottenham enjoying a week off, Unai Emery’s side can open up a six-point gap over the Lilywhites in the race for fourth spot.

The Premier League weekend concludes at Craven Cottage where Liverpool are hoping to preserve their title dream. The Reds are struggling physically and Fulham have proven stubborn opposition for the league’s best this season. Their home record is also a cause of concern for Jurgen Klopp, who must oversee a victory on Sunday afternoon.

Manchester United will take on Championship side Coventry City in the weekend’s second FA Cup semi-final.

European giants rival Man Utd in Jean-Clair Todibo pursuit – report

Manchester United could face competition if they opt to pursue OGC Nice centre-back Jean-Clair Todibo in the summer transfer window, with Atletico Madrid now linked with the defender.

United have seen the heart of their defence ravaged by injuries throughout 2023/24 – at present, Harry Maguire is the only senior centre-back available to manager Erik ten Hag – so recruiting in that department seems like a must ahead of a crucial 2024/25 campaign.

Todibo, once briefly of Barcelona but now thriving at Nice, marshalling Ligue 1’s meanest defence this season, has emerged as a target in recent months. He is also well known to Sir Jim Ratcliffe already through INEOS’ ownership of the French side.

But a new report from France states Atletico Madrid’s firm interest. According to Footmercato, Atletico have made Todibo their first-choice target to strengthen at the back, having seen their once ironclad defence become much more porous since last winning La Liga in 2021.

The 24-year-old is under contract with Nice until 2027, which would require negotiating a transfer fee with Nice in addition to persuading the player to return to Spain.

Manchester United’s interest in Todibo actually predates the arrival of the new INEOS contingent at Old Trafford. But 90min has previously reported there will be no favours or discount offered by Nice, leaving United officials concerned over a premium asking price of up to €60m (£51m).

That isn’t as much as the £70m and higher Everton are expected to quote for 21-year-old Jarrad Branthwaite, who is also admired by United – as well as Real Madrid, but Todibo’s price tag is not currently seen as the best value money on the market.

Tottenham Hotspur were previously put off Todibo by the €60m valuation and subsequently landed Radu Dragusin in January for around half that price. Despite still being linked with Todibo, 90min understands there are no plans to resurrect interest or make an approach. Spurs are also eyeing Branthwaite, who received his first senior England call-up in March.

What Julian Nagelsmann’s agent said about prospect of joining Bayern Munich

Prior to Julian Nagelsmann signing a new contract to remain Germany head coach until after the 2026 World Cup, his agent had hinted that talks were taking place with former club Bayern Munich in addititon to a handful of other teams.

The former Bayern boss, who was surprisingly sacked by the Bavarians just 13 months ago, initially had a contract with the DFB until the end of Euro 2024 on home soil this summer. But an expected return to club football, having made his name as a manager before his 30th birthday, hasn’t happened.

Representing Nagelsmann, Volker Struth stated on German podcast Spielmacher that a decision on the 36-year-old’s future was likely to be made iimminently, which turned out to be case when the DFB then confirmed the contract extension on Friday morning.

“It will be decided soon, in the next five, six or seven days. It would be complete nonsense to say that we are not talking to interested parties,” Struth explained earlier in the week.

“Without saying who the interested parties are, I can only say that it is not just Bayern Munich. That is normal. It is my job and it would be a bit of a joke in the media to say we are not in talks. Of course we are talking now,” he clarified.

Bayern are on the hunt for a new boss after already confirming that Thomas Tuchel, who replaced Nagelsmann, will be leaving the club this summer. They were eyeing a treble when he was dismissed but ended up scraping only the Bundesliga title and have gone backwards domestically in 2023/24.

Nagelsmann was a name being discussed internally at Liverpool, with the club yet to decide on a successor to Jurgen Klopp. The shortlisting process has been data-led, leaving doubts over Nagelsmann due to the need to prove himself in terms of character rather than coaching alone. Concerns over his maturity and a swagger bordering on arrogance previously led to issues at Bayern and a reluctance to change frustrated some players.

Chelsea didn’t feel Nagelsmann had the right personality for them prior to appointing Mauricio Pochettino last summer, while Tottenham Hotspur didn’t take initial interest in the German beyond the due diligence stage before formally pursuing Ange Postecoglou instead.

Ruben Amorim has scored particularly highly as part of Liverpool’s search, while Roberto De Zerbi remains of interest. Nagelsmann was not first in line to get the job. Prior to recommitting to Germany, he was also linked with Barcelona but was considered an outsider.
